Young people, never believe that one payment will suffice. The sextortionist quickly replied that he would only delete the photo if Jake paid him once more. In great distress, Jake then paid another $130 to delete the photo and leave him alone. Again a day later, the sextortionist demanded more money. Jake argued that the extortionist had not kept his word and he didn’t believe him anymore. The extortionist boldly retorted that Jake didn’t have a choice. Jake then desperately countered, “You are ruining my life!” After making a third payment, Jake pleaded for the guy to please leave him alone because he had already paid almost $700. The criminal showed no compassion and replied that he didn’t care and that Jake was his personal Genie!

This extortion exchange only lasted five days. It seems that Jake recognized he didn’t have the means to pay more money and he feared his life would be ruined if this photo went out to everyone he knew. At that point a hopeless, crestfallen and humiliated Jake committed suicide!

Protection from Internet extortion

Sgt. Jeffrey Plank of the Utah Department of Public Safety said there are many deterrent measures our youth and adults can take to insure that sextortion will never happen to them:

1) Never get in front of any camera or webcam without all your clothing on;

2) Youth or parents should tape over the cameras on all computers because some people are hacking into computers and photographing or videotaping undressed targets;

3) Sgt. Plank stresses ardently that people should NEVER send out partially or fully nude photos of themselves or others! With one fast click, these photos can be sent out into the entire world!

4) If your boyfriend or girlfriend takes a partially or fully nude photo of you, demand s/he deletes it instantly. If s/he refuses, then get that phone somehow and delete the photo instantly. If you can’t get it, then contact the police because this ‘friend’ has committed a crime. You should break off this friendship if s/he refuses to delete the photo.

5) If anyone becomes a target of an extortion scam, authorities say they should SEIZE ALL COMMUNICATIONS with the extortionist instantly. The bad guy is expecting you to respond and isn’t going to share these photos until he gets his money.

6) Quickly capture whatever information you can from that first extortion communication.

7) Then immediately contact law enforcement in your area and also the social media company to file a report. Ask the social media company to promptly delete your account so the extortionist can no longer contact you or get your email addresses.

8) Also file a report on the Internet Crimes Complaint Center (IC3.gov). Another place to file a report is on CyberTipline (www.cybertipline.com), which is the 911 of the Internet. Or you can phone: 1-800-THE-LOST. Parents, whenever you hear of a situation when a child or teen commits suicide in your area or other areas, you need to reassure your kids that their lives are extremely precious and there is no problem great enough to warrant committing suicide or taking someone else’s life (e.
